Tant: Athens Symphony brings joy to season
"Music is love in search of a word," said beloved Georgia poet Sidney Lanier. Another popular poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, called music "the universal language of mankind."
Lovers of the universal language of music will flock to the Classic Center in downtown Athens next weekend when the Athens Symphony presents its annual Christmas Concerts. The yearly Yuletide concerts by the orchestra and chorus are eagerly anticipated events in this community. On Monday, when tickets to the free concerts were given out at the Classic Center box office, hundreds of Athenians and people from surrounding communities waited in line under gray skies.
As usual, tickets to the Christmas Concerts were quickly snapped up by the crowd. Those who did not get tickets still might find it worthwhile to show up at the door, because sometimes people change their plans and turn in their tickets for others to use. The Christmas Concerts with the Athens Symphony and Chorus take place Saturday, Dec. 12, and Sunday, Dec. 13, at 3 p.m.
In keeping with the spirit of the Christmas season, symphony-goers are asked to bring cans of food to help the local Salvation Army bring some "comfort and joy" to the needy during the holiday season. Boxes for donations of canned food will be set up outside the Classic Center.
A full and festive program of Christmas music will be performed during the upcoming concerts, including works by such classic composers as Handel, Bach and Schubert, and by perhaps the greatest American composer, the incomparable Irving Berlin, who penned "White Christmas."
No one but a complete Scrooge or an incorrigible Grinch could fail to enjoy the symphony's Christmas Concerts, and folks of every religion, or no religion at all, will be moved by the spirit and skill of the volunteers who play and sing in the ensemble.
Every performance by the Athens
